Robotic surgery is a type of minimally invasive surgery. The surgeon makes a few small cuts, called incisions, instead of one large cut. A surgeon with special training controls a machine called the Intuitive da Vinci® Surgical System. Inside the body, the machine imitates the surgeon’s hand movements. These movements control very small surgical tools. Robotic Surgery or Robot-Assisted Surgery, Computer Assisted Surgery and Robotically Assisted Surgery are terms for technological developments that use robotic systems to aid in surgical procedures. Robotic Surgery was developed to overcome both the limitations of Minimally Invasive Surgeries and enhance the capabilities of surgeons performing open surgery. The surgeon uses controls in the console to manipulate special surgical instruments that are smaller, as well as more flexible and maneuverable than the human hand. The robot replicates the surgeon's hand movements, while minimizing hand tremors. The surgeon thus can operate with enhanced precision, dexterity and control even during the most complex procedures.
