Individuals who have experienced a spinal cord injury often have difficulties with mobility, self-care, work-related skills, leisure activities, and reintegration into the community. The spinal cord injury rehabilitation program at the University of Maryland Rehabilitation and Orthopedic Institute is specifically designed to help individuals with spinal cord injury or dysfunction achieve the highest level of independent living. The program includes both inpatient and outpatient services. The bed unit for spinal cord injury is bright, comfortable and has a modern design. The term "spinal cord injury" refers to damage to the spinal cord due to trauma (eg, car accident) or disease or degeneration (eg, cancer). There is no reliable estimate of global prevalence, but the estimated annual global incidence is 40 to 80 cases per million population. Up to 90% of these cases are due to traumatic causes, although the proportion of non-traumatic spinal cord injuries appears to be increasing. Symptoms of a spinal cord injury depend on the severity of the injury and its location on the spinal cord. Symptoms may include partial or complete loss of sensory function or motor control of the arms, legs, and/or body. The most serious spinal cord injuries affect the systems that regulate bowel or bladder control, breathing, heart rate, and blood pressure. Most people with a spinal cord injury experience chronic pain.
