The use of surgical robots has grown exponentially despite limited or uncertain benefits and high costs. In certain situations, the adoption of robotic technology brings value to patients and society. In other cases, however, the robot provides little or no increase in surgical quality at increased cost and therefore does not add value to healthcare. A surgical robot is expensive to purchase, maintain, and operate, and may contribute to increased consumption related to surgical procedures and increased reliance on technology, leading to future increases in health care expenditures. Given the current need for budget constraints, the cost-effectiveness of specific procedures needs to be evaluated. A surgical robot should be used when cost-effective, but traditional open and laparoscopic techniques should also be continuously encouraged.
